Now, whenever you want to make a new thumbnail, you open up your template, use File>Open As Layers or some other method to get a layer with the photo/screencap/whatever on it, then move that layer under your white + text layer so it gets covered, then File>Export as a PNG or something. The thumbnail option will also take a snapshot of a part of your video if you don’t have a thumbnail graphic to use. Add or select a thumbnail for your YouTube video. Remember that you can only add a custom thumbnail with a verified YouTube account. This will remove the selected area and leave you with a transparent hole. If you want to add one, simply click on the graphic labeled Upload thumbnail. Now, press Ctrl + X OR use the menu item Edit>Cut. This will let you make parts of the layer transparent. And finally, the upload thumbnail should be a square. Second, the file size for thumbnails should be under 2MB. First, the image size for thumbnails is 1280×720 pixels. Even so, if you think YOU are that rare beast, go ahead. That makes us think that the typical GIMP user is a rare beast and probably not the average user. Right click on the layer and choose "Add Alpha Channel". If you want to create a YouTube thumbnail for your video, there are a few things you need to know. If your photo/image editing needs are less intense, GIMP is likely to be too complex and have too steep a learning curve for most people to bother with it. The remaining selection should be the original lassoed shape minus the white part, i.e. Using the magic wand/fuzzy select tool click on the white part to remove it from the selection. Make sure you select all of the photo and none of the text/logo stuff. Using the lasso/free select tool, click around to make a selection that includes all of the photo and a little bit of the white on each side.
